What are Dentures

implant denture diagramDentures replace several to all of your teeth in your upper or lower arch at one time. They come in a variety of designs and styles, based on your specific smile needs, including:

  • Full removable dentures
  • Removable partial dentures
  • Implant supported removable overdentures
  • Fixed dentures (All on 4 procedure)

Implant supported dentures have many advantages:

  • They are more comfortable since less movement of the dentures occur due to increased stability
  • They allow better biting and chewing capacity
  • They allow the jaw bone to be more healthy and intact since implants allow preservation of the remaining bone

When to Consider Getting Dentures

dental implant diagram 2One of the best times to consider getting dentures is when you need to replace all or most of your teeth at one time. The doctor will carefully design your denture to create a smile that is not only functional, but that is also aesthetically pleasing.

With a denture, we can remove any diseased or non-restorable teeth and then replace them all with a single prosthesis. If all of the teeth are missing, the doctor will use a full denture, overdenture, or All on 4 procedure for your smile reconstruction.

If you are able to retain some healthy teeth, a partial denture will be used instead. Partial dentures replace only the missing teeth and clasp into place around your natural ones.

Which Type of Denture is Right for You

The type of denture selected between yourself and the doctor will depend on what long-term goals and oral health needs you may have.

1. All on 4 Implant Procedures

One of the most common types of dentures that we provide at The MIAMI Institute is our permanent All on 4 procedures. With an All on 4 procedure, the doctor can replace all of your upper or lower teeth with a single, fixed prosthesis.

The design of an All on 4 implant denture is slimmer and more natural compared to a removable denture. It  is permanently anchored onto just four implants, so that it never slips out of place or causes discomfort.

2. Removable Full Dentures

A full arch removable denture shouldn’t look or feel bulky. The doctor is skilled at creating comfortable dentures that impact the natural beauty of your facial profile.

Conventional removable dentures have an important place in dentistry, but also have several drawbacks:

  • Removable dentures can be uncomfortable due to movements and less retention
  • Removable dentures can cause further resorption of the jaw bone by placing additional pressure on the remaining bone
  • Removable dentures can reduce your ability to eat and enjoy certain foods

3. Implant Supported Overdentures

Perhaps you are drawn to the idea of wearing removable dentures, but lack adequate bone support to keep your prosthesis stable throughout the day. In cases such as this, it can be beneficial to implement dental implants as a way to provide additional stabilization and comfort. Unlike an All on 4 implant procedure, overdentures remain removable. Simply take them out at the end of each day to care for them the way you would a traditional denture.

4. Removable Partial Dentures

Our removable partial dentures are created from materials that mimic the natural color and shade of your teeth and gums. Treatment choices can include prosthesis that are free of metal clasps or clips that interfere with your smile’s aesthetics. These acrylic materials also provide added flexion, making your partial removable denture more comfortable to wear than conventional treatments.
