LIP AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

Two common methods are injections and implants. Some injectable lip augmentation procedures include Collagen, Isologen, Hylaform, Hydroxyappetite, and fat. These results are temporary and may last from three months to three years. Examples of permanent and irreversible lip augmentation procedures include Artecoll(TM) and DermaCellagen(TM) and are currently in the FDA approval process. Implants will be fed through the lip, trimmed and then the incision will be closed. This material is long-term and will be gradually replaced by your body's own collagen.

It is generally safer to under-inject than to over-inject no matter which product is used, therefore there is a possibility that you will be coming in again to "finish up" your desired look.

Implant Method
Incisions can be made inside the mouth or on the outside of the edges of the lip. You can expect this method to take approximately one hour or so. The implant will be fed through the lip. Once inserted, it will be trimmed and the incision will be closed. Your surgeon may recommend the addition of Alloderm(r) to bulk up and increase fullness of your lips. This material is long-term and will gradually be replaced by your body's own collagen. Core-Tex (TM) and Advanta(r) are the only approved synthetic, permanent implants.

LIP AUGMENTATION PREPARATION

During your consultation you should be very open: provide all of your medical history and list all of the medications, vitamins, and herbs you are taking (even if you don't think they're important).

Here are some tips that may help you reduce scarring, shorten your recovery time, and decrease your chances of complications:

  • Discontinue using Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn, St. John's Wort, and Vitamin E for one week before and a few days after your procedure. These act as blood thinners and could cause problems with blood clotting.
  • Stop smoking for at least two weeks before and one week after surgery as nicotine can impair circulation and healing.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure including tanning booths, facials, steaming masks, and other skin irritants.
  • Don't drink alcohol in excess for two weeks before or one week after surgery.
  • Drink lots of water in the days leading up to your procedure.
  • Fill your prescriptions before your surgery date, especially any pain medication your doctor has prescribed for this procedure.

LIP AUGMENTATION POST-PROCEDURE

For the Injectable Method

Work: You may return to work immediately after your procedure although you may decide to wait a day or so for swelling to subside.

Swelling and Bruising: Soreness will eventually go away. Slight bruises are common.

Make-up: You may apply make up as soon as your lips feel better.

Recovery: Recovery time is 24 hours to three days.

Results: Final results can generally be seen after a day or so.

For the Implant Method

Work: Most patients return to work approximately two days after surgery is complete.

Swelling and Bruising: You may have some stiffness, burning, numbness and pain. This is normal. If discomfort persists, contact your surgeon immediately.

Make-Up: You may apply make-up as soon as your lips feel better.

Recovery: Rest easy following surgery. Raising your blood pressure can increase swelling and cause bleeding so try not to exercise for at least three weeks. If you feel warm, take your temperature. A high temperature could indicate an infection. Avoid chewing, pursing your lips or excessive mouth movements for the first week following placement of the implants.

Results: Final results can be seen after several days.
