What is a Prosthodontist?
Expert. Professional.

A prosthodontist is a dental specialist, recognized by the American Dental Association, who focuses on cosmetics and functional reconstruction and/or replacement of missing, broken, or discolored teeth and tissues with natural-looking substitutes such as crowns, bridges, veneers, denture, and implant prostheses.

SMILE ARCHITECT, DR TODD B. BARSKY – ON CBS SUNDAY MORNING

Three years of rigorous specialized training and experience, after completing dental school, give prosthodontists the special understanding of the dynamics of the smile, the preservation of a healthy mouth, and with extensive laboratory skills to handle the materials used in restoring and replacing teeth. Upon completing the advanced training, prosthodontists become board eligible and may take an examination requiring two years or more to complete, to become board certified. Because it is a very challenging and demanding examination, only 30 percent of all prosthodontists become board certified. Dr. Barsky is currently the only board certified prosthodontist in private practice in Miami and he prides himself in performing to the highest standards of his profession. Most dentists claim to be cosmetic specialists, but cosmetic dentistry is not a recognized specialty of the American Dental Association (ADA).

A Prosthodontist is the specialist in caring for adult patients who want a higher level of routine care, have high expectations, desire improvements in the appearance of their smile, or who need more involved dental problems expertly treated.

Their advanced specialty training can improve your appearance. Some of the procedures which can improve your smile are:

  • Complete ceramic aesthetic crowns ("caps") onto teeth.
  • Veneers (a very thin porcelain "shell") onto teeth to conceal defects.
  • Using bonding technology on a tooth's surface to change its shape or to close gaps.
  • Bleaching discolored teeth to brighten and whiten a smile

Prosthodontists Also Can Help in Many Other Ways

As dental experts in state-of-the-art procedures and techniques, prosthodontists are able to treat many different, diverse dental conditions such as:

  • Complex care management involving multiple specialists
  • Post oral cancer reconstruction and continuing care
  • Children born with missing teeth
  • TMJ - Jaw/ joint problems
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Snoring and sleep disorders
