POMEGRANATES & GREEN TEA - THE LATEST INGREDIENTS TO LOOK
FOR IN THE BATTLE AGAINST SUN DAMAGE AND SKIN CANCER

Management & Intervention Offers Summer Sunscreen Tips
Miami, FL – (April 13, 2005) -- The latest ingredient in the fight against sun damage, aging and skin cancer comes from two unexpected sources – pomegranates and green tea -- says Dr. Julio F. Gallo, M.D., F.A.C.S. and Medical Director at The MIAMI Institute for Age Management & Intervention.
When looking for sunscreen this summer, Dr. Gallo advises: “Look for a sunscreen that not only contains an SPF with a minimum of 15 to 30 for the face, but that also contains green tea extracts and pomegranate extracts. Lab studies have indicated that the polyphenols and anti-oxidants in these have highly effective anti-carcinogenic properties.”
Dr. Gallo also offers basic tips to successful sunscreen application, “A sunscreen should be applied to the face in the morning after bathing and before make-up. One can alternately use makeup such as a foundation with an SPF of 15 or greater. If outdoors playing sports or at the beach, sunscreens need to be applied frequently since water and perspiration tends to wash off the protection. I recommend reapplication every one to two hours if in the water or if sweating. Also, it’s better to reapply an SPF of 30 a few times during the day rather than an SPF of 45 or 60 thinking that you are getting that same protection when it is actually washing off of your body.”
Studies have shown that green tea contains anti-oxidants which may have a protective effect against cancer. In 2003, scientists at the Rochester University discovered that chemicals in the tea also shut down a key molecule which can play a significant role in the development of cancer. Green Tea’s benefits have been widely chronicled over the last several years and have made it one of the most popular ingredients in a wide variety of products from food to cosmetics.
A newer entry in the arsenal of tools against cancer, the pomegranate, is native from Iran to the Himalayas in northern India and was cultivated and naturalized over the whole Mediterranean region since ancient times. Scientific studies extolling the pomegranate's health benefits such as improved artery health and lower risk of stroke have recently made headlines. Now, the fruit is being shown to have another very important health benefit. It is widely cultivated throughout India and the drier parts of Southeast Asia, the East Indies and tropical Africa and was introduced into California by Spanish settlers in 1769.
Dr. Gallo concludes, “A broad hat and loose-fitting clothing are also recommended protective elements in the summer heat. And don't be fooled by sitting in the shade, especially when boating – the reflection of the ultraviolet rays from the surface of the water amplifies the effects of the sun.”
