The Golden
Ratio: Beauty in the Realms of Nature and
Art,
As Told By the MIAMI Institute
Descending from five pure generations of
artists, including his father - a sculptor
and art teacher in Italy - Dr. Julio Gallo,
co-founder and medical director of The MIAMI
Institute for Age Management and Intervention,
knows a thing or three about the value of
applied arts and sciences. His familial
pedigree, artistic sensibilities and passion
for the sciences led him to plastic surgery,
a field where he is able to command a mastery
of his own art onto living, breathing sculptures.
"A kind of asymmetrical symmetry can
be found in a lot of what we do," muses
Dr. Gallo. "It's almost Zen-like, this
perfect imperfection. We are in a unique
position to apply our philosophy with our
patients, and we are allowed to simply because
it works. We don't make up the rule of what
is beautiful; we just follow the code set
by nature and followed by mankind for centuries."
Dr. Gallo refers to Phi, otherwise known
as the "Golden Number," "Golden
Ratio," and called "The Divine
Proportion" by the Renaissance artists.
It has fascinated intellectuals of diverse
interests for at least 3,000 years: Egyptians
used it to build the Pyramids; Ancient Greeks
used it to build the Parthenon; Da Vinci
used it to paint The Last Supper, among
other masterpieces. You can see it in the
spiral of sea shells, in the wings of butterflies,
in the veins of leaves, even in human beings;
the golden rectangle is evident from the
proportions in the face to the arms to the
hands to the teeth. Phi is a profound and
pervasive number; this ratio has had a massive
impact on beauty and balance in the design
of art throughout history, and it is with
this awareness that the MIAMI Institute
centers their work.
The modern Renaissance men and women behind
The MIAMI Institute have paid homage to
this mystical ratio in everything they do,
from their procedures right down to their
architecture. For example, The Institute
was built using the Fibonacci sequence,
a mathematical sequence intricately interconnected
to the Golden Ratio. The MIAMI Institute
applies their own technological renaissance
to the age-old standards of proportional
beauty and balance in the human form. While
beauty is most certainly a subjective thing,
the unique personalized approach the doctors
take at The MIAMI Institute utilize these
ratios to restore a vibrant and balanced
appearance, which they have witnessed to
directly impact their patients' internal
health in a drastically positive way.
MORE ABOUT THE GOLDEN NUMBER
The deceptively simple Golden Number is
the ratio of the line segments that result
when a line is divided in one very unique
way. If you draw a line (A) and divide it
into a larger segment (B) and a smaller
segment (C), the ratio of the length of
the entire line to the length of the larger
line segment is the same as the ratio of
the length of the larger line segment to
the length of the smaller line segment.
In other words, A is to B as B is to C,
but only when A is an exact number (1.618
)
times B and B is the same exact number (1.618
)
times C.
