With over 40 years of experience, Robert L. Simons, M.D., board-certified in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and otolaryngology, is one the nation’s most renowned facial plastic surgeons.
Dr. Simons earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his undergraduate degree from Dickinson College. He completed an internship in surgery at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia and a residency in otolaryngology at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, New York.
With his extensive training and experience, Dr. Simons is hailed as a super-specialist in Rhinoplasty. When it comes to his approach, great emphasis is placed on the initial patient consultation and the goal of preserving as much tissue as possible, ensuring a natural appearance that is symmetrically enhanced. In addition, Dr. Simons favors the endo-nasal method of surgery (i.e., surgery without external incisions). “Rhinoplasty is the premier surgery,” states Dr. Simons, “Through this one central procedure, patients can experience tremendous overall improvement, both functionally and aesthetically.”
Dr. Simons was one of the early advocates of sub-specialty training and it comes as no surprise that teaching became an integral part of his professional career. He became a young committee member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) and an active teaching member at the Goldman Course in the late 60’s. His abiding interest in the growth of the AAFPRS is evidenced by the time he has devoted to elective offices, first as Southern Regional Vice-President (1975–76), National Program Chairman (1977), and then as AAFPRS treasurer (1979-83), before assuming Presidency in 1985-86. While he held the office of President at the Academy, Dr. Simons emphasized the need for a stronger future identity of the specialty. Subsequently, an endowment program was initiated, the Founders Club was organized and the Past President’s Club established. In addition, he edited a book for the Academy, "Coming of Age: A History of the AAFPRS” in 1988.
Over the years, Dr. Simons has worked with equal fervor to ensure the success of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPR). Following his role as secretary in 1988, he served as President of the ABFPR from 1991-1995. In 2006, he co-edited and authored “Here to Stay”, which chronicles the events that led the AAFPRS to establish the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS) in 1986. The book also illustrates the ABFPRS’s remarkable journey to win recognition as equivalent to primary boards of the ABMS in every state that has set standards for such equivalence.
A noted author of numerous articles and chapters on various aspects of facial plastic surgery with special expertise in Rhinoplasty, and the recipient of countless prestigious awards, Dr. Simons frequently presents at medical meetings and symposiums in the U.S. and abroad.
Dr. Simons served as director of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine for more than 25 years. Currently, he holds the position of voluntary clinical professor of otolaryngology at the medical school. Dr. Simons operates out of the Miami Institute for Age Management & Intervention and holds the esteemed position of Medical Board Chairman at the Institute.
