Q: What is LED Photomodulation?

A: LED Photomodulation is the interaction of light delivered through Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to activate cells causing them to produce collagen or multiply. One of the original applications for LEDs was PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) using photo-activated creams for the treatment of actinic keratosis and pre-cancerous lesions.

Q: How is LED Photomodulation different from Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy?

A: Other light-based skin therapies including intense pulsed light and laser treatments rely on thermal injury to the skin’s collagen, water or blood vessels to create changes in the skin appearance. LED Photomodulation does not rely on thermal energy and the related tissue trauma to effect change. Therefore, patients are not subject to the variables associated with wound healing.

Q: How does LED Photomodulation work?

A: LEDs offer a totally natural, non-ablative method for skin rejuvenation. The light from the LEDs interacts with cells and stimulates them to produce new collagen and elastin. The system is coded in such a way to stimulate specific cell changes. By manipulating the codes, different treatments can be designed for specific applications.

Q: How many treatments will I need?

A: Typically treatments are spread over several weeks or a few months. The number of treatments and the treatment times will vary depending on the problem being treated, the amount of surface area treated and the area treated. Since the results are progressive, you will notice more correction with each treatment. As full correction approaches, treatment intervals can be expanded to three to six month intervals. Since the skin continues to age, maintenance treatments will be required.

Q: Will the treatments hurt?

A: No. The treatment is very relaxing. The delivery of the LED energy to the skin is fast and completely pain free. The energy generated by the LEDs is cool and gentle enough to treat all ethnic skin types.

Q: Can I have LED Photomodulation with other treatments?

A: Yes. LED Photomodulation can be administered alone or in conjunction with other treatments. It is highly complementary with other skin treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers as well as non-ablative laser and IPL treatments. Cosmetic surgeons worldwide are beginning to choose LED Photomodulation as one of their preferred treatments for fine lines, hyperpigmented lesions (brown spots and freckles) and other skin problems associated with photoaging.

Q: What are the benefits of LED Photomodulation?

A: Treatments are less expensive than other light based therapies. The main benefit is a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, brown spots, scars and the amount of redness. In addition, the treatments are pain free with no downtime at all.

Q: What will I feel like after my treatment?

A: Most patients return to normal activities immediately. What patients like the most about LED Photomodulation is that treatments are fast and they don’t have to miss any activities.

A series of six to eight treatments is recommended and you can be treated up to twice a week since there is no thermal effects to the skin.
